Subject: [Atlantia-Marshals] Melee training

Unauthorized Fencers can participate in Melee Training at practices

This note is in response to a request for clarification on any restrictions to unauthorized fencers training for melees.

Atlantia has a strong tradition of excellence in melees. This is based on our solid foundation of skilled fighters and that on lots of good training. For this tradition to live on we need to train our new fencers across the range of melee techniques and as often as possible.

One of the primary purposes of Official Practices is the training of fighters to conduct themselves safely in combat. This is in addition to learning skills to defeat their opponents. It is done with both authorized fighters and unauthorized fighters, arguably it is more important for the unauthorized fighters. To be of maximum benefit it should occur across the range of martial activities.

This clarification details the training of unauthorized fighters in melees.

  • Unauthorized fighters cannot participate in melees at events.
  • Unauthorized fighters can participate in melees at practices under these conditions.
    • This is to be done under the supervision of the Warranted Marshal.
    • The Marshal shall structure the session with stated training objectives.
      • The nature of the session will support training of all participants and will be structured in consideration of the skills of the unauthorized or less experienced fighters.
      • The Authorized participants will know who the Unauthorized fighters are and what the training goals are.
      • The intent is to introduce the new fighter to melee concepts at a pace that they can absorb. Examples include
        • Initially Drills with minimal movement such as;
          • Forming two static lines, explaining the concepts of cross shots and then having the participants lay on and verbally acknowledge any hits.
          • Erecting terrain and demonstrating a kill cup.
          • Setting up units and conducting basic maneuvers.
        • Then Sparring at a slow pace to include limited movement.
        • Finally participating in free form full speed melees.

The goal is to give the Unauthorized fighter basic skills to safely fight in melees once they authorize. What is not to happen is putting an unauthorized Fighter into a melee conducted in a competitive manner which they are not prepared to handle. Once they have the basics then they can take on more advanced training.

Melees are my favorite fencing activity as I know they are for many of you. Let’s bring up the next generation to share that enthusiasm.
